French 19th Century Mahogany Commode
-
Description
A magnificent mahogany commode, with four drawers, made in France circa 1880. A piece of black fossil marble rests atop the case piece and is in good condition with few scratches. The commode has had its façade finished using wonderfully-marked mahogany veneer. It has been applied using a technique known as book-matching. This is what gives the commode’s front its mirrored and balanced appearance. With the erratic nature of wood grain, it can be hard to get continuity between each piece of veneer. By mirroring the grain, an instant copy has been made that complements the other perfectly…think “Rorschach test”. A hidden drawer is housed in the commode’s apron, lacking hardware. Three larger drawers are found below, each with a pair of round brass knobs, cast with a repeated palm motif. The keyholes are adorned with inset brass escutcheons.
