Description French Empire chest of drawers with gilt bronze mounts
French, early 19th Century
Height 92cm, width 129cm, depth 62cm

This beautiful walnut chest of drawers was crafted in France in the early 19th Century. It employs classical ornament sparingly, and utilises the colour and grain of the walnut wood to create beautiful surface effects.

The chest stands on four feet, the front two turned and the back two straight. Its body is rectangular in shape, to accommodate three, long drawers at its centre. These are fitted with gilt bronze keyholes — which can be locked using a key that comes with the piece — and gilt bronze knobs. The drawers are flanked by a pair of Doric columns, which have gilt bronze bases, smooth walnut shafts, and simple gilt bronze capitals. These columns support a wooden panel, which projects out from the chest body. This panel is mounted on its corners with gilt bronze palmettes, and at its centre with a gilt bronze scene, which depicts Apollo driving a chariot pulled by two swans. The chest of drawers is fitted with a smooth, black marble top.

This piece is a refined and elegant piece of furniture, which will suit either an antique or contemporary interior.
