Description | Stunning rare metal bookcase/ cabinet by Friso Kramer for De Bijenkorf, manufactured by Asmeta in the Netherlands in 1953. This beautiful piece was designed by Kramer in commission for Martin Visser, meant as a shelving unit designed in the style of the luxurious department store De Bijenkorf (meaning “the beehive”, therefore the colors). It is made of high quality white, dark blue and yellow metal. The shelves can be put in several positions, making them suitable for many different interiors and preferences as a bookcase, cabinet or room divider. In good original condition with minor wear consistent with age and use, preserving an amazing patina. Friso Kramer was born in Amsterdam in 1922. As an Industrial and furniture designer and as a member of influential groups and movements, Kramer’s ideas and creations have consistently worked to propel the modernist aesthetic of the Netherlands. In the period from 1948-1963 he was employed by De Cirkel, where he designed some of his most iconic pieces. A retrospective exhibition of his work was held in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1977. In 1979 Friso received the title ‘Royal Designer for Industry’ by de RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce) in London. |
