Pair of Victorian period walnut bedside cabinets by Lamb of Manchester
-
Description
This pair of bedside cabinets were made in the High Victorian period by Lamb of Manchester, a leading maker and retailer of high class furniture in a modest, elegant and understated design, a world apart from the decadent decorative tastes of French makers of the same period.
They each feature moulded edges and rounded corners. Additionally, they have canted angles with corbels - same scrolling motifs that form the sole decorative element - and are both raised on a plinth base. Their gentle, comforting, humble style exemplifies the pleasing nature of English antiques from this period and gives an excellent example of the quality of work made by Lamb, a leading firm achieving great renown and repute under the leadership of James Lamb, born 1816.
They are stamped 'Lamb / Manchester' and with inventory number '4377.' -
