Mid-18th Century American Colonial Chest, Signed and Dated 1746

  • Description
    An exceptional and unique architectural chest from colonial America. The chest rests on ogee bracket feet, and detailed pilasters with fluting and bases and capitals sit on top of a drawer section with canted and fluted corners. The central section of the chest features a classical pediment and pilasters surrounding the keyhole escutcheon. The lid with a molded edge opens to reveal a large open area with a till box to the left. The underside of one drawer has been inscribed "E.S. Ammon Oct. 1st 1746." The piece relates to pieces from Frederick, Maryland, and the piece bears certain German construction influences. Likely Shenendoah or Maryland origin.
