Mid-Century Sideboard in Book-Matched Walnut & Rosewood with Tulip Wood Inlays
-
Description
This stunning and dramatic Mid Century Modern sideboard was realized in France circa 1950. It features four volumetric tapered rectangular legs sittings on robust brass sabots of the same form that connect to a floating sculptural apron- all in beautiful walnut. The apron pierces each of the legs as it traces the under body of the sideboard and offers a scalloped embellishment at its center undergirded by brass detailing. The body of the sideboard showcases an abundance of bookmatched diamond motifs whose interiors are composed of repeating chevron forms in rosewood. A rectangular pane, presented in relief, offers a wealth of repeating downward facing chevron detailing- embedded with curvilinear neoclassical tulip wood inlays- separates the the two side panels.
Furthermore, the base of the sideboard presents solid sinously curved blocks of bookmatched rosewood offering a tight vertical grain. The piece retains its original hardware- stylized beveled diamond forms with branch-like offshoots in palindromic symmetry. The front doors open to reveal three shelves on the right and three drawers (as well as two recessed areas) creating a plethora of storage possibilities. There is a banded inlay tracing the fronts of the two upper shelves testifying to the fact that no detail- no matter how small- was overlooked in its exacting construction.
With its exquisite craftsmanship (representing a bygone era of excellence in artisanal construction) and clean modernist lines, this piece is sure to delight discerning collectors of first rate Mid Century Modern design objects, as well as those with a penchant for all things exquisite. Its clean modernist lines and refined color palate make this piece a winning addition to any style of interior from classic Mid Century to contemporary. It has been newly restored to mint condition.
