Description The very fine and rare Venetian drop-front desk shown here from the 2nd quarter of the 18th century is a unique example, the lacquer and the gilded chinoiserie decorations and hardware are in their original condition, and the piece has miraculously not needed to be restored. Called ‘la scrivania á ribalta con alzata’ in Italian – and a “trumo” in common usage there, but not to be confused with the French “trumeau”; a mirror inset into the boiserie, (usually over the mantelpiece). This furniture form was, and still is, considered the most prestigious piece in the Italian “salone” of a palace or villa.

The shaped commode base with three drawers is topped by the desk section containing in the interior pigeon holes and drawers centered by a shaped door, a sign of high quality workmanship, all in brilliant gold chinoiserie motifs on lacquer. The upper section has an equally fine interior with more chinoiserie decoration and again a bombe door hidden behind fine etched mirrors featuring chinoiserie figures in their requisite gowns holding umbrellas.
