Description A single-burner Argand lamp with a cast finial above an urn-shaped font on a footed base. Having a cut and frosted glass shade. The lamp design is probably derived from engravings by Giovanni Battista Piranesi's edition of plates "Vasi, candelabri, cippi, sarcofagi, tripodi, lucerne, ed ornamenti antichi" (Rome, 1778). This was a rich source of inspiration for English lighting designers of the early 19th century. Produced by many English and French lighting manufacturers, starting in 1784, the Argand burner would dominated lighting for sixty years.
