Period 1950-1979
Condition Good. Excellent condition. Wear consistent with age and use.
Description Beautiful, unique, and elegant, this pair of white floor lamps evoke the avant-garde stylings of French designer and innovator, Jean Royère. The lamp bodies have feature a tapered metal rib design that allows for attention to naturally be drawn to the negative space between the lamp shade and the ribs, perfectly complimenting any modern interior design schemes.

Despite his lasting legacy as one of the most avant-garde and innovative interior designers of the twentieth century, Jean Royère never received a formal design or art education, instead basing his oft-changing style on personal preferences and experiences in his life. According to Royère himself, this was actually one of his greatest strengths as a designer, as not being shackled to one school of thought allowed him to pull from multiple sources, break free from traditional limitations, and truly embrace his unhampered creativity. Born to a well-off family in the early twentieth century, Royère spent his youth deeply entrenched within the intellectual, cosmopolitan, and creative hub of the Champs-Elysées district of Paris, where he first became infatuated with the interior stylings of high society. It wasn’t until Royère was nearly 30 years old, however, that he decided to pursue his passion for interior design. After apprenticing with a furniture maker for two years and constantly improving his craft, Royère was selected to design the interior of the Brasserie Carlton on the Champs-Elysées, which marked him as an up-and-coming innovator in the modernist design scene. Featuring modern materials including metal tubing and Bakelite, Royère quickly distinguished himself from the rest by truly embracing newfound techniques, styles, and materials in his designs. This experimental style and undeniable talent for interior design would catch the attention of wealthy and distinguished elites the world over, with Royère being personally commissioned to create pieces and interior design schemes for such dignitaries as King Hussein of Jordan and the Shah of Iran. His pieces still enjoy popularity and recognition today, with many celebrities, such as Jennifer Aniston and Kanye West, still embracing and celebrating his avant-garde style.
