Description This ornate carved giltwood wall mirror was created in the Régence period (1715-1723), when Phillipe d’Orléans (a nephew of Louis XIV) ruled France until Louis XV was old enough to become king. The decorative arts at this time were defined by their elegant and delicate use of classical forms. The style marked a transition from the grandeur of the Baroque of Louis XIV’s court towards the Rococo of Louis XV.

The mirror is composed of a rectangular frame with a double border, topped by an arch. The arch is beautifully carved with scrollwork, flower trails and stylised birds with cornucopias in their beaks and it is crowned by a classical mask which is haloed by feathers. Below, the inner and outer borders of the rectangular frame are carved with strapwork motifs, and the corners decorated with classical masks and stylised foliage.
