Description A group of four Rococo walnut and ebony quatrefoil marquetry side chairs - part of a larger set - with masterful all over serpentine contours and distinctive "line and dot" marquetry inlay. Central European, possibly Russian, ca 1750. The distinctive Bohemian form, including hoof feet, splat grab scroll and quatrefoil-all over marquetry is derived from the Neuwied School. A possible attribution to the Strassbourg area has been suggested.

CF: Abraham Roentgen (commode and chairs), for whimsically punctuated patterns of geometric marquetry more closely associated with Italian (Neapolitan) and Russian examples. Variously inscribed with random roman numerals, three chairs are on premiere, the fourth in contre partie, further indicating association to a larger set.
