Airborne Metal Lounge Chairs Upholstered in Cow Hide, France ca 1950s

$ 10,450
  • Description
    Airborne is one of France's most successful and influential design companies of the modernist era. Not content with merely reproducing licensed designs, founder Charles Bernard was eager for Airborne to create original works with the design talents of the day, and this rare and exceptional pair is most likely of the result of one of these collaborations.

    Mid-century modern French designs like these chairs were notable for their revolutionary approach to materials, drawing upon industrial technology without compromising on aesthetics. The architectural black metal frames feature unique solutions, primarily in the arms. Their round, looped frame connects directly to the legs, framing the whole body. The wide arms support upholstered armrests and thinner metal tubes running across the front and the back. The overall look has an industrial impression, however it remains artistic as well in a carefully balanced manner. Still, there is a clear focus on functionality and comfort as well with raised seats and slightly reclined backs. The raised profile further contributes to the architectural look and accentuates the thick seats. The medley of straight and more rounded lines is highlighted by the upholstery; the light cow hide’s colour and texture contrasts cleverly with the black metal. The postwar years saw unprecedented creativity in French design in the 50s and 60s, when experimentation was key. Before long, this new mood of discovery would vanquish the functionality of the immediate postwar period. What had been a question of urgency was now one of creativity and hedonism, inspiring the design of these chairs as well.

    The chairs are marked by the producer’s label reading: “marque déposée (trademark) Airborne”. The French company is responsible for some of the most individualistic seating models of the 50s and 60s in France. This rare, one-of-a-kind pair is a prime example of their modern aesthetic, sure to draw attention in any space.
