Antique English Regency Pair of Black Painted Klismos Chairs
-
Description
A fine pair of black painted and brass-mounted dining chairs of Grecian-Revival 'Klismos' form,
A further pair and an armchair en-suite available,
circa 1810.
These black-japanned and cane-seated chairs, with Grecian boldly curved legs and gilt-brass paterae, are designed in the French fashion popularised by Thomas Hope and Henry Holland. Their curved 'Sabre' legs derive from the Greek 'Klismos' chair, an epic timeless design, popular by circa 400 BC, while their black japanning reflect the era's fashionable obsession with the Ancient Egypt. -
