Mid-Century Modern Three-Seater Sofa by Carl Malmsten (Attr.), Sweden 1960s

$ 7,315
  • Description
    The term “Swedish Modern” first emerged in the 1930s, when Swedish design was becoming increasingly known in Europe and the United States. Reaching its peak in the 1950s, it was characterised by many modern qualities that blended natural materials with the Scandinavian respect for craftsmanship.

    Carl Malmsten has had a lasting influence on Swedish and contemporary furniture design, devoting his life to the renewal of traditional Swedish craftsmanship. He was inspired by creative simplicity, the natural feeling of wood, and based his designs on local materials and traditions, making them accessible to a wide audience. This piece reflects the Swedish Modern design ethos of the era. The sofa has a distinctive wooden frame structure. The back and arms are comprised of vertical wooden slats, creating an airy look that ties in with the elegant, yet relaxed off-white striped upholstery. The upholstery covers the back and side cushions of the sofa, offering unity and fluidity. The sofa is completed by six stained wooden legs, placed symmetrically at the centre and sides of the structure, providing not only stability but the added detail of a small decorative carved adornment on the front legs. The emphasis of this piece is on the welcoming and open shape paired with the beautiful materials, from the fabric to the wood.

    Modern Swedish designers expressed the old, inherited forms and norms as well as new, bold ideas with their creations. The result is continuously impressive - beautiful, eternal, individual pieces of furniture with a unified and harmonious feeling. The muted colours and gentle design make mid-century furniture like this three-seater sofa an ideal addition to contemporary living spaces.
