    A fine late 19th Century hall bench attributed to James Shoolbred and Co., the rectangular seat with pierced rectangular back with pierced baluster gallery, flanked on each side by downswept arms on circular supports, on rectangular tapering sabre legs joined by stretchers.

    James Shoolbred and Co. of Tottenham Court Road, became one of the first large department stores in London. Starting as a draper business, Shoolbred began making high quality furniture circa 1870, for which they were given a Royal warrant by the mid-1880s. This stool is similar or identical to many signed or labeled examples.
