European Solid Wood Stool with Mortise and Tenon Joinery, Europe ca 1960s
-
Description
From Charlotte Perriand to Axel Einar Hjorth, solid wood stools have been staples in European design history. Modernist stools like this one stem from one of the earliest forms of seating, the milking stool. With a highly functional history and modernist look, this stool is a rare and stylish piece.
There is always at least one element that distinguishes handcrafted stools from one another. Here, it is the ergonomic hand carved seat and the artistic way in which the mortise and tenon joinery sinks into the legs. The seat has an ergonomic design to accommodate the human body, which is supported by two legs that widen towards the end. Every functional part, including the stretcher between the legs serve an aesthetic purpose as well. The lines, while appearing crisp, flow quite freely at closer inspection with subtle curvature. The result is a unique appearance that complements the visually arresting pattern of the wood, especially on the seat, where the grain immediately stands out. The mortise and tenon joinery that connects the stretcher to the legs is especially telling about the woodworking skills and artistry of the maker.
Being functional as well as aesthetically pleasing, this stool is a great addition to set the tone of a space. The design interprets a traditional stool design with unique twists, expert craftsmanship and materials, thanks to which it can add depth as well as functionality to a space.
