French 19th Century Artisan’s Workbench
-
Description
This French 19th century workbench is a fascinating relic of technology from before the assembly line, a hybrid of organic rusticity and industrial innovations specially adapted for the artisan who made it. The top planks are impossibly thick, up to 3 ¼”, patinated by saws and hand tools necessary to the carpenter’s craft. Four variably sized and roughly hewn legs support the top and a live-edge lower shelf, secured by heavy bolts which date this piece to the latter part of the 1800s. A large vise grip projects from the left leg, opening by a heavy iron lever to unscrew the bolt–a great feature should one want to repurpose this piece as a console table for an entryway. The awe-inspiring workbench appeals to multiple design tastes, from brutalism to industrial to primitive for its charming imperfections. Cleaned and polished with a French paste wax, ready for your interior. Please view the detailed images.
