Description An interesting early 19th century Regency period side chair, in the manner of George Bullock, branded VR for the Royal household of Queen Victoria (1819–1901).

England, circa 1815–1820.

Why we like it
These superb quality, very stylish dining chairs, having a most unusual feature - turned and reeded back uprights, correspond to a design by George Bullock and relate to seat furniture he supplied for Napoleon's use at New Longwood House at St Helena in 1816. It is a particularly fine and rare design, executed in solid mahogany.

Attribution
The present chair can be compared with a design recorded in the 'Tracings by Thomas Wilkinson, from the Designs of the late Mr George Bullock 1820' (City Museums ad Art Gallery, Birmingham, M.3.74, p.22).

A set of identical chairs was sold Christie's London, 23 May 2012, Lot 319 (£18,750).

Provenance:
The chair is branded VR for the Royal household of Queen Victoria (1819–1901; reigned 1837–1901) and has a paper inventory label of HM Queen Elizabeth II household, which indicates that the chair had been at one of the Royal properties until fairly recently, although it is difficult to find out which one on particular and whether it was supplied to the Royal family by the cabinetmaker or entered the Royal household in a different way, i.e. through marriage etc.
