The Marshmallow Sofa was designed by George Nelson in 1956. Despite its appearance, the seat is very comfortable and its upholstered elements are removable and interchangeable. The frame is made of black lacquered steel while the cushions are upholstered in colored faux leathers (yellow, light blue, dark blue, light purple, light red).
Some notes about the author: despite his importance in the spread of design in the U.S. (among others, in collaboration with Eames, Saarinen, Noguchi), George Nelson began as an architect: born in Connecticut, after graduating from Yale he lived for a few years in Rome.
In Europe, he met princes and exponents of the "International Style." Back in the U.S., he worked as editor of the magazine "Architectural Forum." For Herman Miller inc. he oversaw many important projects: in particular, a modular office furniture system that reflects his architectural training.
