Description
Red Gerrit Rietveld chair, The Netherlands, 1974
A red armchair by Gerrit Rietveld, the same edition as from the book : ‘The Complete Rietveld Furniture’ 1993.
This chair is an elaboration on the ‘Military’ theme. Its basic construction is similar to that of the Military Chair.
Rietveld added armrests and, more importantly, took this opportunity to provide the design with a seat and back
support of laminated wood. This gives the chair a resiliency and degree of comfort lacking in the previous models.
The chair is made by Van de Groenekan, De Bilt in 1974, also the example of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
94x61x64 cm. Frame from oak slats, nut and bolt joints; sprung seat and backrest from bent birch plywood (three-ply); painted
