Description
Pair of black Sori Yanagi Elephant Stools by Kotobuki, Japan c. 1950s.
Yanagi foil sticker on underside.
Originally designed by Yanagi as a work chair for his studio, the stool was released by Kotobuki a couple of years later after the company developed the technology for producing glass-reinforced plastic (fiberglass). The design quickly became known as the Elephant Stool because the form evokes a stylized trunk when viewed head-on.
It’s common to find examples that have had holes drilled into them for drainage, given the stools were popular for use outdoors. These two examples are both completely untouched and in beautiful condition.
Kotobuki was the first ever manufacturer of these stools, they were later made by Habitat and are now made by Vitra but are quite different as they're made in molded polypropylene plastic.
Two available, priced individually.
Measurements: 13" height, 12" diameter of seat, 18.5" diameter of legs
Condition: Excellent condition. Minor signs of wear to fiberglass as is to be expected with age but no chips to feet, no holes drilled into legs or seat (as is common for these stools). Please refer to images and feel free to be in touch with any questions or for additional images. -
