"Model 1462" Dining Chair by Karl Schrøder for Fritz Hansen, Denmark 1930s

$ 2,375
  • Description
    Karl Schrøder was an artist generally known for his ceramic creations that, for a period of time, he made in his studio in Lillerød. Late in his life he would also design furniture for the most renowned Danish manufacturer, Fritz Hansen. His furniture designs however, remain very rare.

    With a heavy focus on functionality, this design style leans toward modernism and organicity, while incorporating elements of the predecessing design eras. Karl Schrøder designed this chair as part of a collection of rope chairs for the Danish furniture maker Fritz Hansen in the 1930s. Twisted paper cord woven across an open wood frame has been used to form the seats of Danish chairs since the 1930s, but through the mid-century era paper cord became perhaps the most distinctive and, for some people, the type of seat most closely associated with chairs from the Danish Modern period. Noteworthy for its durability, Danish cord is also beloved for its functional and aesthetic qualities. The woven or basket form of seat and back of this dining chair has a tight, visually pleasing pattern in great condition. The beech frame is bent in the back, comprising the back legs and back with a stylish curve that defines the profile. In comparison, the front legs are straight to complement the paper cord and to provide contrast to the curve in the back. Thanks to its inherent modernism, this chair model can stand in (and out) any interior style.

    Founded in Denmark in 1872, Fritz Hansen is an internationally renowned interior design brand. The design company’s work is guided by the philosophy that even a single piece of furniture can transform, beatify an entire room. In collaboration with visionary designers, the company shaped the Danish design tradition.
