  • Description
    Pierre Paulin (1927- 2009)
    Large sofa "ABCD"

Wood and fiberglass structure, foam padding, recently recovered with Bergamo wool from Bisson-Bruneel; resting on spherical casters.
Artifort edition, model created in 1968.

The French designer, Pierre Paulin was born in 1927 in Paris. In the early 1950s, he studied stone carving and pottery at the Ecole Camondo in Paris. He is best known for his collaboration with Artifort, which began in 1958 and lasted almost half a century. From this relationship came several iconic pieces, such as the famous Mushroom Chair (1959), Ribbon Chair (1966), and Tongue Chair (1968).

In 1970, Paulin was commissioned by Le Mobilier National to decorate the private apartments of President George Pompidou at the Elysée Palace. In 1983, he furnished the office of François Mitterand. Paulin's work is influenced by his German roots, by the precursors of modernism but also by the American designer couple Charles and Ray Eames. His pieces are exhibited in permanent collections of many highly regarded institutions, such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, the George Pompidou Center in Paris, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourn and the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna. Paulin died in Montpellier in 2009.
