Description
An extremely rare English oak-framed upholstered sofa, late 17th century, possibly early 18th Century. Very few examples remain of this early type of English Sofa.
The cartouche-shaped back having a wide channel-moulded and scroll-shaped frame, decorated with carved flowerhead and centred by a bold 'scallop-shell' cresting, with drop-in padded back, and hipped and down-swept scroll-ended open arms, stuff-over seat, on ball and faceted tapering front legs, joined by a wavy-profile and chamfered X-form stretcher centred by a finial, upholstered in olive-green silk velvet with repairs. -
