Rare Swiveling Windsor Stool in Black Paint, ca. 1820-1840

Origin United States
Period 19th Century
Creation Date Circa 1820-1840
Description Dimensions (inches): 25.25" tall x 14" wide x 14" deep, 13.75" diameter seat

This unusual windsor chair is in the form of a medium height stool with a round, swiveling seat. The turnings are in the bamboo style indicative of the 1st quarter of the 19th century, though the chair it could date slightly thereafter. Made sometime between 1820 and 1840, there is a wooden ring where the seat would typically be, into which the legs are mortised. The seat is perched above this on a rotating, cast iron post, which is set onto a turned wooden cylinder. This is mounted on specially made cross stretcher that fits the design and is beautifully sculpted into the tapered stretchers between the legs, on either side. There are ten stretchers in total, which contributes to the very sturdy construction.

The black-painted surface is excellent, early, and probably dating to the mid-19th century. This was applied during its course of use over an earlier red wash. The seat is poplar. The origin is probably Pennsylvania, but could be New York State. The design is both functional and beautiful.

Condition: Overall excellent. The cylinder that holds the shaft for the seat was damaged along the bottom edge. This was repaired by shaving a half inch or so off the bottom and re-applying it in place, which allowed for restoration without adding wood or paint and with little alteration at all to either its appearance or original condition.
