Description
Attributed to Thomas Gilpin (active 1752–67)
Gilpin is the second earliest documented Windsor chairmaker in Philadelphia, the first being Jedediah Snowden. From 1755–61, Gilpin’s workshop stood on land owned by Samuel Powell I (d. 1756). In 1762 Gilpin sold six low-back Windsor chairs to Garrett Meade at 15 shillings apiece. This is one of the few known extant Gilpin low back Windsor chairs. -
