August Thonet 1829 -1910 (Germany)
He was born in Boppard, considered as one of the early pioneers of German furniture design. He took over his family furniture manufacturing business, Gebruder Thonet, in 1869. His unique style of chair, utilising dramatic, cultural curved wood frames was born out of his desire to construct a machine that could bend wood in such a way that it could be reproduced over and over again. This machine, completed in 1876, would go on to produce some of his most important designs, including the No. 33, which is still a mainstay of stylish dining rooms and communal areas the world over.
Thonet—the oldest surviving furniture company in the world—began in 1819, when cabinetmaker Michael Thonet (1796-1871) established a furniture workshop in Boppard, Germany. Some of the essentials of the Biedermeier style, he specialized in chairs, tables, and storage pieces characterized by clean lines, reduced ornamentation, and an emphasis on functionalist principles. By the 1830s, Thonet’s experiments in laminated and steam-bent wood furniture, like his famous Boppard Chair (1836), brought international acclaim. Thonet’s designs pursue a combination of lightness, durability, and comfort unknown in European furniture at the time. -
