Description ITALY, 1930's, Attributed to TOMASO BUZZI ( 1900 - 1981)
An exceptional and important pair of polished walnut armchairs with tapered legs, and brass decorative mounts.

In the late twenties and early thirties Tomasso Buzzi and Gio Ponti, working together, developed a neoclassical vocabulary deliberately reconceived for modern times in a luxurious mannerist vein. In this magnificent pair of armchairs, Buzzi demonstrates his mastery of this new vision, drawing out the lines of his sensuous curves, plumping his cabriolet legs, which became a sort of signature motif for the furniture he and Ponti designed, and highlighting his beloved bow form, abstracted from an archers bow. Grand in proportions, elegant in posture, and enveloped in rich walnut grain, this rare pair are a perfect expression of the modernist spirit of Italy in the 1930’s.
