Description These majestic armchairs are prime examples of Empire style furniture, featuring Egyptian Revival sphinx-themed armrests and further classically-inspired detailing. Crafted from mahogany, the chairs have been decorated with gilt bronze mounts and upholstered in a fine cream, fabric with light green, yellow and black stripes.

Each chair rests on four, straight legs, the front two of which are mounted with gilt bronze paw feet. Gilt bronze palmettes and leaf forms are mounted onto the tops of the legs, and the aprons are decorated with a long, gilt bronze laurel leaf and rosette motifs. The armrests are cast as gilt bronze sphinxes — mythical creatures formed with female heads and lion bodies — with long wings that have been beautifully rendered so that each individual feather is visible. The chairs lean back slightly, as is typical of Empire style seating, and their top rails are decorated with more gilt bronze laurel leaves, rosettes and palmettes.
