Description | The Black Forest tradition of carved animal sculptures is often attributed to a German origin, though actually began in Switzerland in the early 1800s using dark pine trees found in Southern Germany. This small table came out of a French collector's estate and is likely made there in the late 19th century. The case is trimmed in carved oak (or pine) with one drawer displaying a shield and flowers. In the center of the field is what looks to be a bees nest - very intriguing. The best feature is the pair of carved standing lions holding up the case, mouths open in roar. One of our favorite pieces. Wear to finish, slight indent at top, crack at base, otherwise good. All carvings intact | ||||||||||||
