Description
This museum-worthy Brazilian Modern bar cabinet from the 1950s is crafted from three noble Brazilian woods: Imbuia, Roxinho and Pau Marfim. Its expressive composition balances sculptural architecture with intricate craftsmanship, transforming a functional bar into a distinctive work of decorative art.
The cabinet’s façade features elaborate marquetry depicting an abstract party scene, with stylized instruments, glassware and festive forms articulated through contrasting wood tones. The motif reflects the optimism and cultural energy of postwar Brazil, when narrative marquetry became an important decorative language within Brazilian modern design (As feature in the last image)
A central cabinet is framed by open shelves supported by slender dark uprights, while an extended upper surface provides an elegant preparation and serving area. Below, the dramatically angled base incorporates rhythmic geometric elements subtly reminiscent of musical notation, reinforcing the celebratory character of the marquetry.
The Imbuia, Roxinho and Pau Marfim have aged beautifully, developing warm tonal variation, depth and a richly layered patina. The contrast between the luminous cabinetry, darker structural elements and graphic marquetry gives the piece an animated, almost architectural presence.
Sculptural yet highly functional, the interior opens to reveal five shelves offering generous storage for bottles, glassware and bar accessories. Its open proportions and narrative detailing create a relaxed but luxurious presence—an exceptional example of the artistry, imagination and material richness of mid-century Brazilian design. -
