Technical ingenuity and mastery are indispensable and fuel each other to achieve equally sublime and atmospheric results in The Puydt furniture. This rare oak dining table is an exceptional piece that is just as stunning as it is hard to come by.

The marks of Brutalism can be observed in the unornamented, solid wood, exposed joints, and raw oaken surfaces. The design of this table projects an air of strength and solidity. Each element is well-thought-out to serve a dual purpose, a practical and a design function, exemplified by the shape of the legs and the wooden pattern of the tabletop. The robust rectangular tabletop is supported by an interesting lower structure, including legs shaped like upside down ‘Y’s, that is defined by brutalist simplicity and expert woodworking. The precise connecting and adjusting elements are akin to the Japanese “Kumiki”, a wooden building technology where grooved wood pieces are joined together to form sturdy three-dimensional objects, and making it possible to produce longer pieces. The lower structure’s connection to the top and the horizontal stretcher’s connection to the legs show the mastery of this technique in this table.

The brutalist design is perhaps the best way to showcase the elemental beauty of any wood. Oak has been the defining material for European brutalist pieces for centuries for this reason, as the oak’s pattern is beloved for its versatility. In the 21st century, unlike in architecture, brutalist furniture design has been making a comeback, making 20th century pieces like this table a rare and valuable piece of the movement.
