Description This elegant Chinese altar table features a single-plank top of solid Elm wood and large well-formed apron stretchers in the form of clouds. The finish is original and deep groves are shown on the top, the result of long use and exposure. The legs show considerable wear and some erosion due to exposure to water. This is highly desirable and supports the age of the piece. The piece has been waxed and lightly stained but much of the original oxblood stain survives on the apron and on the legs. The table may have been a “wine” table, used for serving ceremonial foods and liquors or it could have been used in an ancestral shrine. It probably dates to the mid-19th Century and came from Shanxi Province. Shanxi Province has been an important source of elegant Ming-style Chinese pieces, owing to the former high prosperity of the area. Wear consistent with age and use.
