Thanks in great part to an early emphasis on wood and a theoretical resistance to certain modernist currents by influential designers, most European mid-century pieces have managed to avoid associations with cold industrialization and machine aesthetics. This dining table has a solid oak structure that has the organicity of Scandinavian cabinetmaker pieces. Mid-century designers’ predilection for curvilinear shapes and certain woods, often oak, is evident in this dining table’s sinuous circular top and solid wood body. Since a dining table is first and foremost a utilitarian object, this table’s form follows function, with a sizeable top and a structure that assures stability. The design is very successful in balancing large volumes with clean geometrical lines: the legs are geometrical with softened edges and are connected by cross stretchers that also serve as decoration. This dual-purpose shows why cabinetmakers and their designs are some of the most thoughtful pieces of furniture in existence.

The oak wood has aged beautifully and displays a beautiful grain within the wood. Mid-century designers and manufacturers placed a heavy emphasis on quality, which is always visible in the joinery technique and the quality of materials they used.
