Description B. Altman, one of New York's grandest Fifth Avenue department stores at the time, commissioned this table to be handmade in England around 1910 in the very fashionable Edwardian style. This Hepplewhite table has graced the library of a fine old Washington DC home for many years where its leather top and satinwood and mahogany acquired a beautiful patina. The ebony line inlay and hand forged brass pulls add a distinctive look to the 12 drawers. Eight of them are functioning drawers, one of which has the B. Altman label. There are also 4 sealed corner drawers which do not open. The tapering legs are satinwood with ebony line inlay and end in spade feet. The black leather top is edged and decorated in faded gold leaf, which probably means that the leather is original. The table, while considered primarily a library table or desk, would make an exceptional center table.
