Description Highly figured ebony inlaid burr oak circular breakfast table in the manner (and attributable to) George Bullock, the top with book matched veneer and two stripes of ebony octagonal banding, the base of typical Egyptian form with ebonized grooves turned into the tapering shaft, the platform with ebonized bosses on down swept legs ending in brass paw feet.

This table bears many similarities with the celebrated suite of furniture commissioned from George Bullock for Longwood House, the villa inhabited by Napoleon Boneparte during his exile on the island of St. Helena. These similarities include the octagonal ebony stringing, the “Egyptian” column base and the shallow sweeping legs. Compare to illustration x in “George Bullock” which shows a nearly identical table but with the overall shape conforming to the octagonal inlay. It is amusing to think of the defeated Napoleon living in a villa furnished by the patriotic Bullock, noted for his jingoistic use of native English timbers, the ultimate insult added to the injury of defeat.
