George III Mahogany Partner’s Antique Pedestal Writing Table Desk, England

$ 11,000
  • Description
    A RARE GEORGE III MAHOGANY PEDESTAL DESK
    England, circa 1800
    Item # 904XGP22A

    Unusual and incredibly striking, this fine George III pedestal writing desk is designed with a series of regular and faux drawers organized in symmetrical rows and columns. The top is covered in an early gilt-tooled brown leather surrounded by a veneered mahogany border. The top drawer withdraws as an extension of the desk and partially raising over a notched-easel to support papers and drawings on a removable mahogany horizontal bar. This drawer retains an original lock designed by Robert Barron, stamped on the top with his patent number and "R. Barron".

    There is no shortage of storage designed into the form, every aspect of the case having been arranged to maximize drawer capacity from every direction. These are decorated with cockbead molding surrounding the face of each, the drawers crisply dovetailed and withdrawn with mostly original stamped brass escutcheons and generous rings. Affixed in one of the drawers is an old plaque from purchase at Stair & Company in New York at some point.

    A rare and most interesting writing desk, it makes a fantastic architectural statement for the study.

    Measurements: 32" H x 54 1/4" W x 35 1/4" D; withdrawn writing drawer dimensions: 30 3/4" H (from floor) x 37" W x 13 1/2" D

    Condition Report:
    Color variation, more notable between the apron sides and the lower portions; would benefit from being re-colored for more cohesive presentation. Various restorations to the structure and surface, including added blocking, later screws, etc. for strength and structural integrity, patching to veneers, color touch ups, etc. Some warping/bowing to faux drawers. Early leather top with age appropriate wear.
