Rare Baroque Painted Side Table in the Chinese Taste, Spain
-
Description
An exquisite and rare, circa 1700, Asian-influenced Spanish Baroque period side or tea table having original painted 'finishes' on rectangular top surmounting recessed flat frieze above flared front apron and shaped side aprons continuing into graceful cabriole legs ending in trefid feet all connected by an 'H' form turned stretcher. At some point in the 18th century, the table was used as a desk as evidenced by the missing 'back' apron and foot wear on the turned stretcher. The influence this table exhibits is extremely important in European furniture history, as this very form was borrowed from the Spanish and Portuguese by the English (through the Dutch) to become the "Queen Anne Style". A truly elegant and important piece rarely seen.
