ROBERT MARINELLI LIMITED EDITION "LIVING WITH CORK" COLLECTION
The Kinnara Fund’s exhibition titled “Living With Cork” showcases a captivating cork environment composed of skillfully sculpted capsules that evoke the senses, scents, and visuals of the cork ecosystem. The exhibition focuses on the significance of the cork tradition, which relies on the sustainable harvesting of cork oak trees. In this process, the cork bark is carefully peeled from the trees, approximately every nine years. After each harvest, the bark is left to dry naturally in the forest before being transported to a factory where it undergoes boiling and flattening. This traditional method, passed down through generations, has been used for thousands of years.
The collection presented by Robert Marinelli is meticulously handcrafted, emphasizing the artisanal process and organic nature of the materials used. By incorporating cork curls, shavings and pressed cork, Marinelli looked to capture the natural textures and patterns found in cork oak bark. These elements lend a distinct tactile quality to the objects, inviting viewers to explore the pieces through touch, smell and experiencing the essence of cork first-hand. Marinelli also integrates living moss, grasses, stones and other elements of the cork ecosystem into selected designs, establishing a dynamic relationship between these objects and nature. This deliberate choice symbolizes the interconnectedness of the cork forest, emphasizing the importance of preserving and sustaining this unique ecosystem.
