Important Parcel-Gilt Satinwood Marquetry Hepplewhite Side Table

A fine and important English George III circa 1785 Hepplewhite neoclassical satinwood one drawer side table with top having elaborate centre foliate inlays of boxwood, palisander, and fruitwood in banded oval, with palisander banded edge surmounting inlaid ribbon-tied swag frieze on all four sides above carved gilt spiral-ribbon banding on square parcel gilt tapering panel-carved supports with rosette corner blocks above gilt bellflower motifs ending in unique square tapering block-form plinth feet. Originally thought to be Russian and attributed to cabinet maker Christian Meyer, it is now firmly believed to be English. The design of the table is based upon various table designs in George Hepplewhite's 'Cabinet Maker and Upholsterers' Guide', published London 1788, and incorporates forms and motifs of Scottish architect and designer Robert Adam. Tables (and chairs) exhibiting identical, related, and similar designs are found in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, at Osterley Park, Middlesex, and Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire.
