An Early William Spratling Sterling Silver Brooch
-
Description
An "Iris" sterling silver brooch made in Taxco Mexico designed by William Spratling for his atelier. In an exuberant form of a four-petal iris flower with 15 attached shell discs. Pin and attachment for chain on the back, so it can be used as a pendant as well (not sure if that was a later addition). Branded by the sterling mark as shown. This piece is dated to circa 1944, based on small letter "o" in Mexico and the combination of the "Spratling Silver". It represents very well of the first phase of his design with its form and the materials engaged.
