Description | The background of this intricate lithograph and watercolor from France depicts a geisha playing a musical instrument, while the foreground depicts a joker and two women wearing more westernized clothing and makeup. The print is signed at the bottom "Brunelleschi", and features an inscription in both English and French reading "Copyright 1928 by Sté Ame l'Estampe Moderne-Paris," and "Publié par l'Estampe Moderne, 14 rue de Richelieu, Paris-1928." Umberto Brunelleschi (1879-1949) was a celebrated Italian artist who also led a prolific career in costume and set design, as well as children's book illustrations. During his career, he worked for venues such as the Folies Bergere and le Theatre du Chatelet in Paris and La Scala in Milan, and even designed a costume for Josephine Baker. Located on the back of the piece is a small card detailing Brunelleschi's achievements in French. | ||||||||||||
