Description
Rudolph Spangler (1738-1811) was a York silversmith and clockmaker with a long career interrupted at periods when he served in the Revolutionary War and later when he held a series of public offices in York. He retired in 1792 and passed the business to his son, Jacob Spangler (1767-1843).
The hood has an ogee molded broken-scroll pediment terminating in carved rosettes, with one central urn finial on a finely carved C-scroll plinth above trailing panels of carved flowers and leaves. Turned freestanding columns with brass caps and bases flank the glazed door with an astragal top. The waist has cove molding at the top and a case door with tombstone top. The base has an ogee molding at the top and is supported on ogee bracket feet. The engraved dial has roman hour numerals and arabic minute numerals, engraved c-scrolls and foliate decoration in the spandrels, and a moon phase dial with engraved numerals in the lunette. Inside the chapter ring, there is an engraved seconds dial, engraved foliate decoration and a calendar aperture. " Rudolph Spangler" is engraved on the bottom of the dial. Eight day movement. -
