Description
George and his family walked to Papunya via Mount Doreen and Yuendumu in 1960. He has lived at various locations, Yai Yai Creek, Warawa, Mt Liebig and now resides at Kintore with his family. He is the younger brother of Naata and Nancy Nungarrayi. George began painting at Papunya around 1976, since then his painting has developed to a distinctive line style.
George paints Tingari of his ancestral country which includes the sites around Wala Wala, Kiwirrkura, Kulkuta, Karku, Kilpina, Wilkinkarra (Lake MacKay) and Kilpinya to the north-west of Kintore across the West Australian border. George Tjungarrayi is a very successful aboriginal artist with collections in many countries, and his paintings are much sought after. -
