Description
Helen Shupla is considered a "Matriarch" of contemporary pottery from the Santa Clara Pueblo. She is best known for her red melon jars, of which this is an example. This jar has very pleasing color, sinuous form and gracious proportions.
Helen developed an unusual way of forming the ribs of the melon jar. While the clay was still soft, she pushed it out from the inside to form the rib rather than carving it in from the outside. This allowed for a softer curve. This is very difficult to do and thus her melon jars have a distinctive and graceful form. -
