Landscape with Classical Building in the Background

$ 4,000
  • Description
    Louis Chaix was a painter and engraver. His chief commission was to provide the interior decorations of the Château Borély near Marseille. The Borély family, who had been established in Provence since the 14th century, held an enviable position in Marseille as large property holders. In 1767, Louis Borély commissioned the construction of a château in the Italian style. In order to achieve an authentic look, Borély sent Chaix to Italy to research the motifs to be used in the interior. Chaix conceived a sumptuous interior with trômpe-l’oeil and vast compositions with mythological subjects for the ceilings, walls, and doors, juxtaposed by gilded boiseries and gypseries. His designs were greatly admired by such illustrious visitors as Charles VI of Spain, the Duchesse de Berry, Alfred de Vigny, Eugène Scribe and others.
    This drawing combines the nature of his native midi and the classic architecture of Rome so admired by the French artists who studied there.
