Description
Antique Staffordshire penny bank “Colonial Women” dated to 1850’s very good condition, minor wear to the paint due to the age.
Rare Antique Staffordshire Penny bank is a great gift for the avid collector or novice. This bank is an excellent start for children or adult collections. We do not know just when the first penny banks appeared in America. The earliest record shows it was imported from England in 1847. As usual, penny banks are given as good luck gifts and New Year presents. In the 1800s, England’s Staffordshire potters made money boxes to meet the public’s preference for rural scenes, flower covered cottages, animal and character figures. They were crude and simple but when decorated with glazes they became attractive ornaments, which were often displayed rather than used, although small ones were given to children to use.
