Gustave Cimiotti was born in New York in 1875, and raised in Verona, New Jersey. His first studies were carried on in a private studio, and later at the Art Students League in New York and the Metropolitan School of Art under the instruction of Beckwith, Twachtman, Bridgeman, Cox and Weir. Cimiotti continued his studies in Paris with Benjamin Constant and at the Delacluse Academy in 1900. On his return to America he began exhibiting in important contemporary exhibitions including the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Corcoran Art Gallery and the Art Institute of Chicago.
Cimiotti’s paintings possess a refreshing range of bold, crisp, colors combined with fine drawing and composition. His unique method of applying the paint using a rapid succession of horizontal brush strokes enables his pictures to have a light, yet robust quality about them. His masterful depictions of sky and clouds are “par excellence”. Many of his canvases depict the rolling hills and undisturbed farmland of his native, New Jersey.
Cimiotti enjoyed a long career enduring endless travels including many trips to Bermuda, Vermont and Monhegan Island, painting at every destination. He made many influencial friends along the way including artists, Winslow Homer and John LaFarge.
Still painting at age 93, Cimiotti passed away in New York City in 1969. -
