A Chinese Scholar Lingbi Rock on Stand

Sold Sold
  • Description
On offer is an extraordinary and very rare Chinese Scholar Rock (also known as Gongshi, the meditate rock) on a custom stand, the rock is from Lingbi, one of the four famous historical scholar rock-producing towns in China. The scholar rock is priced traditionally by Chinese scholars and nowadays collectors worldwide for its abstract and poetic beauty. This particular rock is of an arch form with linked orifice and display beautifully from all angles. The surface is dark and smooth yet with naturally formed wrinkles that mimic ravines and grotto in the mountain.
The extraordinary thing about the rock is that on the back of the rock is engraved with three Chinese characters in Ancient Li style calligraphy Dew Dropping Rock, and further with smaller characters noting the name of the collector and the year of the collecting. The literary name and formal name is ZhangYin (1761-1829), a famous painter of Qing Dynasty who was known for his painting of pines. He collected, named and inscription-carved this rock on DaoGuang sixth year in Qing Dynasty (1826). His collection of stones only rarely surfaced in auctions in China and Hong Kong.
It is fitted on a custom wood stand for display and meditate; However the stand we believe is a later replacement.
Total height is 26 inches and the height of the rock is about 16 inches.
