French 19th Century Louis Philippe Gold Gilt Mirror
-
Description
A large hand-carved Louis Philippe mirror, made in France circa 1880. Each corner is ornamented with lovely carved floral details. Floral and foliate garlands extend from floral bouquets tucked into each corner, with etched leaves and vines running up and down the sides. The frame has seen much of its gold gilt worn away throughout its life. Frequent cleaning and dusting can erode the metallic gold gilt over time, exposing the carved wood frame and red clay bole substratum, as seen with this mirror. The glass is the original mercury glass with ample foxing and an extraordinary appearance.
